Frequently Asked Questions
Is Camp Tigray overnight, and how long do attendees stay?+
Yes — Camp Tigray is a multi-day overnight camp. When you register, you and your family are expected to attend for the full duration of camp, not just stop by for a day. Activities, meals, evening programming, and community-building are designed around everyone being present the whole time. Please plan accordingly when you register.
Who can attend Camp Tigray?+
Camp Tigray is open to families of all sizes and ages, of any ethnic background. Youth ages 10 and up are able to attend unchaperoned with signed parental consent.
What's included in the application fee?+
Your application includes lodging, all meals from Friday dinner through Monday lunch, activities, and programming. Bring bedding and personal items.
What clothing should I pack?+
Pack for 3 days of outdoor activities: comfortable weather-appropriate clothes, warm layers (sweater, hoodie, jacket, undershirts, sweatpants), day clothes (shirts, shorts/pants, underwear, socks), warm pajamas, hat & sunglasses, swimwear, two pairs of comfortable closed-toe shoes for activities, flip-flops or sandals for showers, and rain gear just in case.
What toiletries and bedding do I need?+
Bedding (REQUIRED): sleeping bag, blankets, and pillow. Toiletries: toothbrush & toothpaste, towel, soap, shampoo, deodorant, body lotion, sunscreen & insect repellent, hand sanitizer, and feminine products if applicable. Bring what you personally need — this is just a guide.
What other essentials should I bring?+
Essentials: reusable water bottle, flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries (REQUIRED), any personal medications (to be given to camp health staff if needed), and a small backpack or day bag. Optional: tent, sleeping pad for extra comfort, camera, board games, books, musical instrument, notebook & pen, cultural clothing for Tigray lessons or special events, and snacks, food, or non-alcoholic drinks.
Are there accommodations for dietary restrictions?+
Yes! We accommodate a variety of dietary needs including halal, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan (tsom) options. Please indicate your dietary requirements during your application.
Is financial assistance available?+
We never want cost to be a barrier. Contact us directly to discuss scholarship options.
What if I need to cancel?+
Registrations are eligible for a 50% refund if a cancellation request is submitted at least one week before camp begins (by July 9th). No refunds will be issued for cancellations made on or after July 10th. We understand that unexpected circumstances happen — if you're facing an emergency or extenuating situation, please reach out to us at camptigray@gmail.com and we'll do our best to work with you.
How are sleeping accommodations handled for families?+
Sleeping accommodations for families are not guaranteed. Young children under a certain age will be housed with a parent. Children ages 9 and up may be placed in shared, gender-specific cabins to help accommodate space limitations.
